Menstruating and spotting, is it normal?

Is it normal for your period to stain your clothes?

It is not uncommon for some women to experience heavy periods to the point of staining their clothes. However, if this happens frequently, it could be indicative of a condition known as menorrhagia, which is the medical term for excessively heavy or prolonged menstrual periods. Gynecology and Obstetrics specialist Dr. Konstantinos Tserotas talks to us about this issue and its possible implications and care.

Possible causes:

  • Hormone imbalance: Irregular levels of estrogen and progesterone can cause excessive thickening of the lining of the uterus.
  • Uterine fibroids: Non-cancerous tumors in the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding.
  • Endometrial polyps: Small growths on the lining of the uterus.
  • Coagulation disorders: Conditions such as von Willebrand disease can affect the blood's ability to clot.
  • Use of intrauterine devices (IUDs): Some types of IUDs can cause heavier periods.

Diagnosis and treatment: To determine the cause of heavy periods, it is important to see a doctor. Evaluations may include a physical exam, blood tests, ultrasounds, and endometrial biopsies. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause and may include hormonal medications, specific therapies to control bleeding, or in some cases, surgery.

Care and handling:

Menstrual cycle monitoring: Keep track of the length and amount of your menstrual flow.

Use of appropriate hygiene products: High-absorbency sanitary pads or menstrual cups may offer better protection.

Regular medical consultation: It is essential for proper management and prevention of complications.

If heavy periods interfere with daily life or cause concern, seeking medical attention is the first step toward effective management and a better quality of life.
