COPD: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Dr. Raúl Jimenez is a specialist in Pulmonology and speaks to us in this Podcast about COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It is made up of two main diseases: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is often linked to smoking, although it can also be caused by exposure to environmental pollutants and dust.

Diagnosis: COPD is diagnosed through several tests. Spirometry is the main test used, as it measures how much air a person can inhale and exhale, as well as the speed of this action. Other tests may include chest X-rays and blood gas analysis to assess the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs.

Treatment: Although there is no cure for COPD, treatment can help control symptoms and improve quality of life. Common treatments include:

  • Medications: Bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids and antibiotics.
  • Oxygen therapy: For patients with low blood oxygen levels.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Exercise and education programs to improve breathing capacity and overall health.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgery to remove damaged parts of the lung or even a lung transplant may be necessary.

Care:People with COPD should take certain precautions to control their condition:

  • Avoid tobacco smoke and other air pollutants.
  • Maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
  • Get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia to prevent respiratory infections.
  • Control other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, to reduce the risk of complications.
