The IUD or Intrauterine Device is a small device or equipment that is placed inside the woman's uterus by a gynecologist and that serves as a contraceptive method.
According to doctor specializing in gynecology and endocrinology Konstantinos Tserotas, the duration and effectiveness of this device depends on the type of T it is, as it is also called.
"The so-called T for Copper, classically lasts between 5 and 7 years, which is the time it takes for copper to dissolve; while the T for Endoceptic Hormone lasts 3 to 5 years, which is the time it takes for the hormone to be released. of the device", explains the doctor.
According to Tserotas, these devices can cause side effects over time. In the case of Copper T, after a few years of use, there may be an increase in the bleeding pattern, an increase in cramps and in some patients, inflammation of the walls of the uterus, while with Hormone T Endoceptic, there may be amenorrhea; that is, absence of menstruation.
Candidate patients
Tserotas explains that "There are some risk factors or aspects that must be taken into account before inserting an IUD. There are actions and conditions that in certain patients indicate that we should not use Copper T on them, such as having multiple sexual partners or suffer from pelvic inflammatory diseases.
"On the other hand, the Endoceptic Hormone T can be placed in any patient and its side effect can be considered a benefit and that is that it stops menstruating. It has the same contraceptive effects, but its side effects are less bothersome", he adds.
"Both intrauterine devices are made to be placed and remain inside the uterus for a long time," the gynecologist requires.
According to Tserotas, the IUD can be placed in women of any age, even adolescents and women who have never been pregnant, thanks to the size of this device today.
"They are a very good way to take care of yourself, especially for those women between 40 and 45 years of age who do not want or cannot use hormonal elements due to their age. Once you talk to your gynecologist about the pros and cons of the IUD, you can make an informed decision.", Señala.
The IUD, regardless of its type, must be inserted by qualified personnel, under strict cleaning or asepsis conditions, and requires frequent monitoring to verify that it remains in position.
